Before use, ensure the bear spray is easily accessible. If your canister comes with a yellow zip tie for added safety during packaging, it must be removed before deployment.

1. Remove Yellow Zip Tie: Carefully cut and remove the yellow zip tie that secures the trigger mechanism. This tie prevents accidental discharge during transport and storage.
2. Understand the Safety Clip: The white safety clip on top of the trigger mechanism must be slid off before the spray can be deployed. This clip is designed to prevent accidental firing.

In an encounter with an aggressive bear, quick and effective deployment is crucial.

1. Assess Wind Direction: Before deploying, quickly assess the wind direction. Always spray with the wind at your back to avoid blowback.
2. Remove Safety Clip: With your thumb, slide the white safety clip off the top of the trigger mechanism.
3. Aim and Spray: Aim slightly downward at the charging bear, targeting its face and chest. Depress the trigger firmly. The canister empties completely in approximately 5 seconds. A short burst of about half a second is sufficient for testing or initial deterrence.
4. Create a Barrier: Deploy the spray in a heavy fog pattern to create a protective barrier between you and the bear. The effective range is up to 30 feet (9 meters).
